on the drive with kenny jones -the listeners were asked what johnny depp, miley cyrus, john travolta, tim burton, nicolas cage and the muppets had in common – they’re all working for disney!
they came to the anaheim convention center to tell fans in person at the D23 expo, disney’s answer to comic-con, for a presentation on the studio’s forthcoming film slate.
depp will don the dreds and gold teeth again in the fouth installment of pirates of the caribbean: on stranger tides. he’ll also play tonto in a big screen version of the lone ranger. plus he’s gonna be the mad hatter in tim burtons twisted 3-d version of alice in wonderland.
cyrus performed her hit “the climb” and discussed her role in “the last song” – a part that was written just for her. (yawn)
travolta, along with wife kelly preston and daughter ella blue, presented their forthcoming flick, “old dogs,” set for release in november. they’ll appear along side robin williams.
“I always appreciate the audience’s love for me,” Travolta said in his first public appearance since the death of his son, Jett, in January.
“I hope they love ‘Old Dogs’ and much as we do, because I’ve got my baby in it,” Travolta continued, referring to his daughter’s film debut.
cage came to unveil the trailer for “the sorcerer’s apprentice,” an adventure film based on “fantasia” set for release next summer. he also agreed to appear in another “national treasure” film.
a cast of 24 muppets performed “rainbow connection” aboard an old-fashioned steamboat as a new muppet movie would be coming “very soon.”
the first all-things-disney convention ever. the event’s name signifies creator walt disney’s 1923 move to hollywood.
all this talk about the mouse got us reminescining about our favorite disney films. hear the drive contingent’s favs here…

Meanwhile, Depp’s Mad Hatter is so dull and phoned-in that one can barely call it acting (Unless putting on too much blush and a stupid wig counts.), Mia Wasikowska’s Alice is so wooden that I kept expecting the Cheshire Cat to use her left arm as a tree branch, and while Helena Bonham Carter’s Red Queen is mildly amusing, the odd chuckle here and there isn’t enough to save this exercise in fantasy sleepwalking.

It appears Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus musician, had at one level discouraged her from leaving Justin Gatson for her present boy friend, Gregg Sulkin. But Billy has come round and has even offered to help Sulkin along with his movie career.
