on the drive with kenny jones – we were curious if any fans of hugh jackman’s musical theater career still looking for some more? well, this may be a chance to see Jackman back singing on screen. when recently asked about the musical carousel, the wolverine responded stating that he has the rights for it and pre-production is under way…i think i just threw up in the backof my mouth a little.
“we just got the rights for it, so we’re now finding director, writer, and I’m very excited about that.” ~ hugh jackman
Carousel was originally Rodgers & Hammerstein musical that opened in 1945 and later made into a movie directed by Henry King. It was picked up by seed productions, hugh jackman’s and friend john palermo’s production company, for remake into a feature film, to be distributed by fox 2000.
can you imagine this guy as billy bigelow in carousel?
okay, bad example. perhaps this guy?
it’s frightening. this got us talking about the movie musical…and if a decent one actually exists. here’s the drive contingent’s take…

okay, maybe not ALL musicals suck…but most are pretty horrifying. here’s a list of some classics that are at least tolerable.
the tolerable musical
- sweeney todd
- the wizard of oz
- the sound of music
- annie
- hairspray
- moulon rouge
- mary poppins
- rent
- a chorus line
and maybe the best musical to ever hit the silver screen…
GREASE! come on. you know you can sing along to every one of those songs!!! i must admit – i too can appreciate this one.
did we miss any halfway decent musicals? have we left yours out? if it’s evita…don’t bother. but please post. but we must warn you – your entry could lead to ridicule, laughter and finger pointing.

No Grease is not the Best Musical – it is very good but not anything like the stage productin of Oklahoma starring Hugh Jackman as Curly who acted, sang and danced to perfection. It has always been my favourite musical it is so involving sad yes butfunny, makes you laugh and are happy and oh the music is superb. Carousel is wonderful and I have heard a not so well recorded Hugh singing “If I loved You’ and that was fantastic.
I for one who have stood amongst the ovations for Hugh in musicals would say Hugh I cant wait and you could bring them Musicals back, We need that wonderful fairyland in these ourbitter times where we can slip away for our world and be happy in Oklahoma for instance
