drive rewinds, the drive

on the drive with kenny jones – we talked about a controversial new initiative that some schools have been putting in to practice…and the results are quite good.

what are they doing different…schools are paying students for getting good grades.  and it seems to be generating higher marks – some have seen increases of up to 40 percentage points school-wide!

here’s an excerpt from the article:

The most ambitious experiment began in September, when seven states — Arkansas, Alabama, Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington — won spots in an Exxon/Mobil-funded program that, in most cases, pays students $100 for each passing grade on advanced placement (AP) college-prep exams.

that’s hell of alot better than grandma givin’ me 5 bucks for every A+.  here’s what the drive contigent had to say about getting cold hard cash for good marks:

i think were heading down a strange path here.  what are we teaching these kids?  isn’t the good grade itself the incentive?  the satisfaction of receiving high marks means nothing – unless you get some dead presidents to go with it.

maybe that’s the (former) teacher in me talkin’…but either way, i’m fixin’ to go back and start from kindergarten…so long as there’s a steady paycheck in it!
