elevator etiquette…to press or not to press

July 22, 2009

drive rewinds, the drive

on the drive with kenny jones – we discussed the elevator or lift – it’s a vertical transport vehicle that efficiently moves people or goods between floors of a building. They are generally powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables and counterweight systems, or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston…and if you press the call button repeated – you’ll get to you’re floor faster!

i wish!  we somehow got on the topic of whether or not you press the call button of your floor – even if someone has already pressed it.  you know you do it!

but why do you do it?

  • do you think the light is pulling a fast one?
  • do you lack the willpower to sit back and enjoy the ride?
  • do you simply take pleasure in pressing your floor yourself?
  • or is yet another bizarre quirk to add to your list?

inquiring minds want to know.  these are all legitimate questions.  here is was the drive contingent had to say on the matter…

Below is a list of rules compiled from the website elevatorrules.com.  this is from the section – a practical guide to pushing the elevator call button.

1.) re-pushing the call button

  • NEVER re-push the call button after someone has already pushed it. this indicates that you either do not understand how the button works or you do not trust the person that has already pushed the button to do an adequate job of it.

2.) wait for the door

  • if you arrive as a door is closing, regardless of how many people are in the car, DO NOT press the button. the people in the car are already prepared mentally for their trip and do not need to be interrupted. WAIT for the door to close completely before pressing the button.      If you press the button by mistake, and a door stops closing, do not board unless asked. Politely apologize and wait for their car to leave.

3. ok to ask

  • If pressing the call button would require you to push through someone, it is acceptable to ask someone else to push the call button for you as long as they are not further away from it or unable to reach the button for you (i.e. coffee in their hands, etc.)

if you require further instructions on – boarding/exiting the elevator,  what to do during the ride, how to wait for the elevator or what is the proper procedure for transporting large boxes via the elevator…please check out the elevatorrules.com website.
