platform change leads to stampede at delhi, 2 dead

today on air with kenny jones – the gang was devistated by this story out of delhi – a 35-year-old woman and a young boy were killed in a stampede at new delhi railway station on sunday afternoon after a change in platform of a bihar-bound train was announced at the last minute.

at least nine others were seriously injured, while many more sustained minor injuries as they got caught in the stampede. The railway minister, ms mamata banerjee, who was in kolkata, ordered an inquiry into the incident.

the northern Railway officials said the stampede broke out at 2.36 pm after an announcement that the train, which was earlier due to leave from platform 13, would now depart from platform 12. earlier another bihar-bound train, was scheduled to be at that platform.

the officials said the announcement about the change was made minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train, leaving many travellers worried. in the rush that followed, a woman passenger tripped near the staircase, triggering the entire tragedy. passengers began running from one side of the platform to another, worsening the situation.

fire brigade personnel, civil defense teams and ambulances were rushed to the spot, while both the railway police and delhi police tried to bring things under control. some order was restored in about half an hour by the police, but by then many persons had been left injured and several others were in a state of shock.

come on people – calm down! If everyone would just slow down, be more courteous to those around them and try to maintain a little order – we wouldn’t have these issues. a woman and child lost their lives because some people were in a hurry TO GET TO A TRAIN! It sounds ridiculous…because it is. so some regard for your fellow man – take a breath – and move slowly to your connecting train.

take these folks on the chinese railway system. have a look at how simple it is to maintain order when boarding a train. everyone will get to where they need to be and its timely and organized…

okay, so “orderly” isn’t quite the word and that might not be the best example… but nobody was trampled to death.

so in the future – lets cut each other a break on the platform. don’t push, don’t shove and everybody just take a deep breath and relax – if you miss your train – hey, it wasn’t meant to be.
