today on air with kenny jones – the gang celebrated the crowning of a new…chess champion. he’s viswanathan anand! he’s a product of the our neighbors to the east chennai. he retained his world chess championship title by defeating local challenger vaselin topalov in sofia, bulgaria.
here’s what sports minister m s gill said about the win…
“i am delighted at anand’s win at wcc. i congratulate him. he is a great credit to india,”
playing with black pieces in the 12th and final game of the competition, anand
achieved an improbable win over topalov to retain the world title by 6.5-5.5 margin. now i don’t know what all tha means, but it must be pretty good.
anand became the first official world champion in recent history to win two back-to-back matches in world championships against different opponents. his achievements span back several years. earlier, in 2008 anand had won the world title in a match against russian vladimir kramnik, in 2006 he had won the world championship match tournament ahead of almost all top players in the world and in the year 2000 he had won the championship when it was held on a knockout basis.
on the program i also learned that chess originated in the subcontinent – so listening to on air with kenny jones can be quite educational…okay, that may be a bit of a stretch, but it was slightly interesting you have to admit.
this got the crew talking about game…more specifically – board games. here’s what the on air contingent had to say about their favorite board games, rules and cheating…
